NAPPY ROOTS was formed in 1996 by six students at Western Kentucky University. Skinny DeVille, R. Prophet, Big V., Scales, Ron Clutch and B. Stille met up at campus freestyling parties, and before long built up a strong following on the local circuit. They set up their own record store and started their own line of Nappy Roots clothing before making their recording debut in 1998 with the independently released Country Fried Cess. The album and the follow-up, 1999’s No Comb, No Brush, No Fade, No Perm, came to the attention of Atlantic Records who signed the sextet and began touting them as the south's answer to New York's Wu-Tang Clan. Nappy Roots made their major label debut in February 2002 with the platinum-certified Watermelon, Chicken & Gritz.
Wasting no time, Nappy Roots released their sophomore album, Wooden Leather August 26th. (Enter the listing party for Wooden Leather here.) Wooden Leather finds the group cooking up their special recipe for country-fried hip-hop, an ever-evolving blend of funky beats, intelligent lyrical science, and irresistible Dirty South grooves. The album features studio contributions from a wide variety of producers and artists, including David Banner, Raphael Saadiq, Kanye West and Lil' Jon. "Roun' The Globe,” the first single from Wooden Leather is already moving up the charts at a number of radio formats, including R&B/Hip-Hop and Rhythmic Top 40.
In conjunction with their new album and fulfilling their patriotic duty, the Nappy Roots traveled to the Persian Gulf as part of Project Salute 2003, the first entertainment tour to the region since Operation Iraqi Freedom. The trek saw Nappy Roots performing for thousands of U.S. and coalition servicemen and women at USO shows at Kuwait's Camp Doha and Qatar's Camp As Sayliyah. In addition to the large-scale shows, the group paid a special visit to Baghdad International Airport, where an opportunity to meet the troops turned into an impromptu concert in a packed hanger.
